Why Do We Like Crime Fiction?
Introduction
Crime fiction, a vast genre that includes true crime, serial killer thrillers, and intense police procedurals, engages us with gripping tales of suspense and captivates our imagination as we delve into the dark side of humanity.
Unmasking the Monsters
Crime fiction unveils the nature of monsters among us, showcasing the unfathomable depths of human depravity. Whether it's a serial killer, a crafty con artist, or a cold-blooded murderer, the genre’s narratives expose the raw and terrifying truth. While fictional horror may have supernatural elements, crime fiction brings us face-to-face with the genuinely monstrous acts that humans are capable of committing. I think it represents a genre of horror that reflects the terrifying realities of our society by serving as a chilling reminder that a very realistic threat can be lurking in the shadows.
A Mirror to Society
One crucial aspect that distinguishes crime fiction from other forms of horror is its connection to real-world events, inherently reflecting on the very real horrors that exist within our society. These stories highlight systemic failures, social injustices, and the fragility of our safety, leaving us with a lingering unease long after we finish reading. Once readers digest the resolution of a crime novel, they are left ruminating on the world we live, in and thinking up ways to raise awareness and promote safe practices amongst their families and communities.
