Guest Post: MY TOP 3 FEARS by Yawatta Hosby

I don’t know about you, but I think it’s fun to scare yourself. Since I write horror and suspense novellas, I use the fear within myself to create frightening scenarios for my characters. Survival horror is probably my favorite to write :)

Here are my top 3 fears (in no particular order):

#1  BEING STALKED

Unfortunately, a coworker stalked me in college during my last semester of senior year, and I was also stalked in my mid-twenties for a couple of years by a stranger. Not a pleasant experience at all. I still get chills thinking about it...I’m not going to lie--to this day, I’m always aware of my surroundings (especially the exits in a room), never letting my guard down, and I  hardly make eye contact with strangers or acquaintances because I don’t want to risk unwanted attention.

In my books, I take no mercy on my characters. It doesn’t matter if they are main or supporting characters. No one is above getting stalked. With Twisted Obsession, I felt so bad for Finia. She was terrorized by her ex Miki. She didn’t know to ask for help until it was too late.

#2  MEETING A PSYCHOPATH OR KILLER

Thankfully, I haven’t met anyone who fits that description. Or have I? I’m constantly binge-watching true crime YouTube videos, and my favorite TV channel is the I.D. one. You never know who someone truly is. Is the cashier hiding bodies down in her basement? Is your teacher a pedophile? Is that stranger you sat beside on the bus going to be in the newspaper the next day for a mass shooting? The world is a scary place…You could be somewhere at the wrong time, then your life ends just like that.

For One By One and Six Plus One, the killers went on a killing spree without getting caught until the very end. In both books, a group of friends were betrayed. By one of their own? Or a stranger? You’ll have to read the books to find out.

#3  BEING STRANDED ALONE

I’m a loner. I don’t mind going to places alone. Heck, I’ll even eat in a restaurant alone. However, if I go somewhere with someone and we get separated, I damn near have a panic attack. One day I was grocery shopping with my mom. To speed up the process, she wanted to split up. Before I checked out, I was searching up every aisle, looking for her. She was nowhere to be found. I went up every aisle at least 5 times. She wasn’t answering my texts or my calls. Turned out she was talking to her boyfriend on her cell by the front door. I had been in full panic mode even though I was an adult woman. To this day, I don’t know why I get like that. I stick by someone’s side like glue, no matter what. Maybe something drastic happened in my childhood and I don’t remember? Or something happened in a past life?

The majority of my horror novellas begin with the group of characters isolating themselves from civilization. Then, of course, mayhem occurs. Dun, dun, dun...

For all the readers and writers out there, what’s your biggest fear?

Keep smiling,
