Guest Post: What Drives me as a Writer?

Maria Lavender stopped by to tell us why she writes and she also gave us an inside look at her sci-fi novel, Blue Vision.

Some say chivalry is dead. I’ve certainly never believed that. It’s why I am still drawn to writing romance, even if the stories land at different ends of the spectrum.

However, three years ago, I began to see an evolution within my writing projects. I was branching out, the focus no longer on romance alone. Some stories had a science fiction or dystopian theme. There was paranormal, fantasy and time travel fiction. Others were…much darker.

Many years ago, I first noticed it when I wrote a few scenes from the killer’s perspective in a paranormal mystery book. In a way, I disturbed myself, knowing I could tap into the darkness of the human condition. In any case, by the time the realization became evident, I began to rebrand myself as a multi-genre author. And I’m more comfortable with that description now, as it allows me to explore anything, to let the muse drift wherever it wants.

But this writing journey is a long-winded tale, and it doesn’t quite get to the heart of the matter.

The truth is I write for the characters that stumble across my subconscious in the middle of the night, fuel my imagination and wake me to tell their stories. From the first scroll of the pen across the page, or the tap-tap-tap of the keys on my laptop, to the time I’ve reached ‘the end’, I am home. I’m a writer. It’s who I was born to become.

Now, since one of the genres Kyla mentioned in her blog call was science fiction, here is some info on Blue Vision, book one of the Code of Endhivar Series, a sci-fi romance.

Book Blurb:

Brooke Sanders just wants to get away from her life for a while. A remote cabin in Montana fits the bill. She doesn’t expect to encounter a mysterious stranger with unusual blue eyes, or events that cannot be explained…

Colin Fielding is on a mission – scout a planet and return home to Endhivar. Simple really. What he doesn’t anticipate is that fate has a pretty twisted sense of humor. Suddenly, this human calls to him, every part of him, like the call of a true mate, and he can’t deny the connection as he gets closer to her.

Little do they know, someone is out to do them harm, as well as the world Brooke holds so dear. Can they stop what’s coming before it’s too late? Or will the universe lose a perfect gem?
